hi everyone

I’ve found this website on badmintoncentral and found some of the tips appear to be pretty useful, so i might as well just join the community.

Anyways, im 21 years old from BC, Canada currently a 3rd year student in SFU.  I played badminton for around 2 years and stopped for 4 years, now trying to get back at playing again, also training in an elite class as of now… i play 5 times at the most in a week, but mostly 3 times per week now. The  problem with me now is the stamina, trying to get back into shape… most of my badminton skills were self-taught so there are small bad habits, that i still need to adjust (like twist the racquet every now and then for no reason (even in a game) lol) I don’t have any stroke problems, just a bit off on the backhand clears.

I used to play with plastic [only], now im playing with feathers as well, and I have to say my performance for these two types of birds are completely different… so hard trying to get used to the feathers, which im having a hard time, some advice would be deeply appreciated… (unless theres no other way than just gaining more experience with feathers)

Hi and welcome!

I’ve had the same problem, but backwards. I
had to get used to plastic from playing feather. Everyone around here
plays plastic, and I have to say once you get the hang of playing with
(good quality) feather shuttles, it’s like a lingering dream always
haunting you. The control and response you have with your shots and the
feeling are something you’re definitely going to enjoy.

Of
course, replacing your shuttle every few rallies is going to give
credence to the saying that “badminton is the poor man’s golf”. Wink

I
haven’t been around long, but if you have any questions about, well,
anything badminton-related, ask Paul. He’s a top-notch coach who really
cares about your progress. It’s a resource BadmintonCentral doesn’t
have readily at hand.

Hope you’ll feel at home on the forum.

Hi TK

Welcome to the forum.

It’s quite a transition from plastic to feather shuttles. As someone once described, you thump a plastic and stroke a feather. Once you master feather shuttles there’s no going back to plastics.

Feel free to join in the discussions and as always, you can contact me with your questions. It’s always better posting them first as I do read every post on this forum!

Hi and welcome.

I would recommend that you use either plastic OR feathers, one or the other if you can. Otherwise it will take you an age to get used to either and you will struggle with both plastics and feathers in my opinion.

With feathers I think you need to hit the shuttle sooner and also adjust the amount of power you use as they tend to be the heavier shuttle, once they get going, they get going so may seem to travel further. Otherwise you will struggle just to get it to the back line right, it will either go miles out or mid court.

I would have to agree though, once you have gone to the dark side (using feathers), you will never want to go back again (using plastics) and once your hooked, thats it!Laugh

But plastics and feathers shuttles just don’t mix. Out of interest, how come you are using them both? Is it for different clubs?
