Hello everyone,

My name is Jin and I have been reading a few of Paul's articles recently and decided to join the forums after seeing how helpful people are on here and how much knowledge there is to share!

I guess I should briefly tell you about myself..

I live in York and at the moment I only get 2hrs badminton in a week and that is at a group coaching session with someone from Badminton England. I used to play a lot (ableit socially and at clubs that didn't compete in leagues). The only competitive matches I really played were at Keele Uni. I had an unfortunate accident with my back and had surgery on a disc at only 22yrs of ageCryYell. This stopped me playing when I was really getting addicted to badminton unfortunately and then after 6 or so months I finally started playing again, but had a temporary relapse of my back problem, which convinced me to stop playing pretty much altogether and stick to football, which I also adore. After 1 more relapse of my problem I went back to physio and have learnt to be more careful and strengthen my core muscles, which has basically enabled me to play badminton freely again (touchwood) and I have become addicted more than ever thanks to coaching sessions that were introduced in York.

ANYWAY, this is MUCH more than any intro needs to be, but I thought I'd explain things properly and I can only do that by saying why I stopped playing for almost 2 years!

Currently I'm looking at joining a club to play regularly at (but not really in leagues or anything). The one good thing about starting again is that I feel like I'm learning from scratch without too many bad habits..

So hello again to everyone!Laugh

Welcome to the forum! It is a tragedy that you should be sidelined from this great sport through injury… but I believe thats all behind you now as you have worked on your core muscles 🙂 A lesson for us all in avoiding injuries I think!

Look forwards to hearing your views and questions!!!

Jin

Welcome to the forum.

Let's see if you can buck the trend of new members by actually contributing.

It's a shame that there are so many players signed up to this forum and yet never make a comment. Everyone has something to say and I'll bet there are numerous unique approaches to the game which would help so many readers to the forum.

Hopefully you'll be a keen contributor so that we continue to spread the word and help players find answers to their questions.

Well if I can contribute one piece of advice, it's to always warm up and warm down regardless of your level of play and look after your back rather than solely concentrating on building your arms and legs etc. Maybe try yoga or even better, pilates. You'll be stunned by the difference they make and you'll be able to play longer and enjoy badminton for many more years than you normally would. Anyway that's my two cents worth, as they say! Any other contributions I'll try making in the appropriate sections of the forum!

I will definitely try to contribute to the forum, though my knowledge is limited! I do think it would be good to have a general discussion forum, which would encourage people to chat and maybe contribute more across the forum

Hi Jin,

great to have you oboard,  certainly a lot of info to be had from this website.

I lived in York for 3 years whilst at Uni,  often played at York RI,   do you ever go ?

Where do you get coaching ?  not sure there was anything like that whilst I was in York,  although I played twice a week for 6 hours with the uni club,  so never really ventured beyond that  🙂

If you're after a club,  Clifton Badminton club play to a  high standard and are a very friendly bunch too,

anyway,  hope you enjoy your stay

Hi there,

I played at RI a few times socially and the standard at the actual club is immense – they have some incredible youngsters there. I hate the courts and lighting though, and it's a bit of a nuisance getting into city centre! I've heard Clifton is a great club too and know someone who taught badminton there. The current coaching sessions are run by Badminton England and are at a place called Energise (formerly Oaklands Leisure Centre at Oaklands School). It's brilliant and has helped me to get back into badminton – hopefully they continue doing it for a while!
