Hi there, my name is Stefano, I’m italian and I live in Trento where I study law, I turned 20 last August. I’m a badminton player since 2011, I took part in some tournaments too, I really like playing doubles and singles, and this year I’m trying mixed doubles too (the problem was that last year we did not have any female players). I hope you will help me since I’m thinking about changing my racket (which I never changed since I started playing) and also advice me about hits, or whatever I ask you about this amazing sport.

Thanks in advance (and sorry if my english is not top notch)

S.

Hi Stefano
Welcome to the forum. Your English is very good.
To help with the reply’s can you tell us :
What racquet are you using at the moment.
By hits I take it you are referring to shots, if so what shots do you need help with and do you require help with the technique or strategy of the shot or both.

Look forward to your reply

Roger

Thank you Roger,
At the moment I’m using the racquet I linked the pics of, it’s a Talbot Torro Isoforce 1011, it’s 3 years old; when I started playing badminton, the thing I liked about it was the fact it is not really heavy ( 87+/- 2 g), notwithstanding I had to train my arm properly because I was not able to defend. As I grew accustomed to this racquet I found the flaws of it.
-I don’t like the mid flexibility, I tried the stiff racquet of one of my Gym mates and, ignoring the head heavy balance which I found really hard to play with, I liked the stiff type, it was far more accurate, and in my game style accuracy is far more important than that little spark of power that flexible and mid can give you.
-I find the weight too heavy for doubles, I’d like a lighter racquet, I think about 78 +/- 2 g.
-I can’t make an accurate shot if i hit the shuttle near the frame, making it difficult to calculate not only distance, position and power, but also the part of the head the shuttle is going to hit. My gym mates told me to re string it because it can be caused by it (i never stringed my racquet, it’s still as it was when I bought it.

After telling these same things to a friend of mine from the gym (he has my play style.. err- I have his play style) , who was in first league before the changes to the points given at the tournaments, he told me I could’ve tried
-Apacs Feather Weight 100
-Ashaway Archblade Carbon 40

Since the only way for me to try them is actually buying them ( and I don’t have a big budget, about 70-75£, so I can’t buy both) I’d like to know if some of you has either tried these racquets first-hand or can tell me something about them, or also recommend other racquets (if possible around the same price).

About my play style, I don’t like to go all-out against my opponent, I rather toy with him around the court, so that he tires and is not able to make his power explode. I also prefer a feint/fake out shot rather than a concluding smash. This is when my racquet betrays me: I don’t do anything wrong, footwork, movement , applied strenght and direction; nevertheless sometimes the response is random.
If my opponent, rather than being a power-type is more like me I increase the number of feints and prefer an aggressive net play or I start doing clear shot and lobs, making the shot of the opponents somewhat predictable.

Hi Stefan

Take a look at Victor Lightfighter rackets as they weigh around 78g. There are 4 in the series so you can choose a specification to suit you.
