Hi everyone, I've got a match on Monday where the team play we are playing use plastic shuttles. (which I personally shouldn't be allowed.)

Doe's anyone else play league games with plastic shuttles? If so would I be better off playing with a head heavy racket or a racket with more manoeuvrability?

Tactics wise is it advisable to play more drops & drives & avoid trying to clear? Thoughts please as I haven't played with plastic shuttles for some time.

Thanx

Darren

1) test the speed of the shuttles as you would a feather. If they are slow be careful. Use the racket with the slackest strings to give you a bit more power and becareful with your shoulder. You will try harder to hit these shuttles as you have to thump them.

2) The shuttle slows down faster than a feather so I would rather you stuck with a head heavy racket.

3) play your shots as you should do.

Good luck

Paul

Darren, what was the outcome ?

Lately I see more and more Viktor Queen shuttles in competition. Don't know about others, but I find them rubbish. They are ok for drives and dab's, but as soon as they go through the air for a clear, they stop halfway. At that point I would love plastic ! A proper yonex, I can hit from baseline to baseline. If I play Viktor, I avoid clears as much as possible. Or they are old shuttles ? How to tell ?

Cheers, ED

  1. We as a team lost 6 -3. I played with someone I have never met before. We won the first game 21 – 19 & 21 – 11 second game let a 16 – 9 lead go & lost 21 -19 & 21 – 15 then lost third game 21 – 10 & 21- 10. my partner had a dodgy neck & shoulder & missed good chances, then I lost my way hitting the top of the tape, but did manage to keep my cool. Looking forward to the rematch at home with feathers. I rarely cleared, I played drops & drives into the gaps, serving with plastics took some adjustment. but will suggest to club to purchase some plastics so we can practice before the next match as half the teams in the league play with plastics : ( Overall first match for new team I felt I did well. Thanx Paul & Ed for your input

That's a good idea to get some plastic shuttles to have some games on a club night before a match, would help a lot, I can see that working (and the same if a club uses plastics got some feather shuttles to practice with).

In the league that I play in, all the clubs use feathers and I think it is written in the rules, but each league has their own rules and whilst you could bring it up at the next AGM for feathers to be used by everyone, I can't see it getting sanctioned as times are hard and money is hard to come by. Shuttles are a very difficult thing to maintain and can easily cost the club more than they have and we have had quite a few teams disappear over the years so whilst I can see you annoyance of using plastics, at least you have clubs to play against! After all, at the end of the day, it's a bit of fun (serious fun mind Wink) so playing is better than not.

At least you will be better prepared for the next time plastic shuttles are used, good luck! Smile

Hi Peter, I know your right re clubs using plastic shuttles especially small clubs,  I decided in my mind to make it another challenge to conquer. And I know the teams won't be looking forward to playing us at home with feathers ; ) thanx for posting your thoughts.

Darren

That's fine but be careful with your shoulder, especially as you are having so much trouble with it. Hitting plastic shuttles will not help your recovery from this injury.
