As you may know, it’s the 100th All England Badminton Championships in March, commencing on Tuesday 9th with finals on 14th.
I will be in Birmingham to enjoy watching these great players on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If any forum member is going on those days and would like to meet up, then it would be great to put a face to a name. I may even tell you about some of the juicy things I’m currently working on!
The AE always has a surprise or two. I’m watching to see how the English players progress. Also, looking to see who may give the great Lin Dan a run for his money. My main attention will be on doubles as it’s the game most of us play more often.
I’ll be paying particular attention to techniques used and looking for anything unusual and yet effective. With this game, you can never say you’ve seen it all.
If I get the chance, I’ll be chatting to the Yonex stringing team to get the latest from them. Questions like, what’s the most popular string, what tensions are the players asking for now, are you still stringing 2 piece with cross strings being strung 10% more than mains?
You may or may not know, but there is a sports hall underneath the main arena. This is where the players are practicing and warming up. I doubt I’ll get access to this area as it’s quite heavy on security, but I’ll go and see the Yonex guys and see if they can help in any way. Well, if you don’t ask, you don’t get.
I’ll post an update each day if I return home at a decent hour. As Birmingham is only 1.5 hour drive for me, I won’t be staying over.
There’s one last thing. I’m hoping to meet up with my good friend who’s very well connected to the Chinese team. Plans are afoot to eat with them on Friday night, so you never know, I may be sharing a table with some very big names! More on that if it happens.

hi paul,
i envy ur luck…i wish i cud be able to see all england some day, don’t know whether it would b true some day or not.
this year i don’t think anybody can put up a challenge against Lin Dan. he seems unbeatable. on the other hand, u don’t hw well he wud do considering he’s coming back after a lay off (so far i know!!) if anybody can put up a fight that wud be LCW i think. don’t know much about other contenders but would love to see taufik do well this time.
who do you think would be contender in doubles? KKK-TBH, LYD-JJS frm Korea, FHF-CU from china or anybody from europe?
let me know about your thoughts.

Unfortunately I think Fu and Cai are past their best although still very potent. I think as far as doubles goes Lee Yong Dae is going to have a successful All England 10. How do you guys think Chen Long is going to do? I think he needs a little bit more time on the circuit before he starts being a real contender, though this may be the start right here 🙂

There’s one thing I’ve learnt over the years about major tournaments and that’s there’s always a surpise waiting for us.
All events are hard to predict. In mens singles, apart from Lin Dan, all the other contenders are susceptible to early round upsets. I haven’t seen enough of Chen Long to comment.
If you’re looking at English players then frankly, I don’t have any confidence in their ability to make it to Thursday. I know, it’s very unpatriotic of me but that’s my honest opinion.
I’ll post again Thursday evening when I’ve watched the days events unfold.

Well guys, whaddaya know? Lin Dan out in the QF, and then the one who beat him (Bao ChunLai) got knocked out in the SF by a Japanese youngster??? In any case it’s Lee Chong Wei’s year at last, on the 100th occasion too! I think he truly deserved it as he has worked extremely hard for a long time (check out those muscles!!! O_O) and I believed he would have beaten Lin Dan anyway.
On another note, well done to surprise MD winners Paaske/Rasmussen!!! Experience triumphs this year at the Men’s Doubles! What a refreshing surprise. It must have been awesome for this old(er) pair to win All England as they haven never won it!
(No comment on the girls – do not rate them)
(Just kidding)

I watched Lin Dan lose and sat in complete amazement. Even when he was match point down I was still confident he was going to win. Bearing in mind he lost to Gade last week too, it does beg the question what’s happening to him?
Taufik versus Gade was a brilliant match. I watched that too. Brilliant badminton. Gade amazes me with his net work. He doesn’t pack a powerful smash compared to Taufik so he has to work really hard for his openings. He uses the net as much as possible to find an opening. So hint hint, learn to use the net to dominate the court, whether playing singles or doubles.

thanks going to try that out today, but would you reconmend cross court net drop shot. My friends says it is not so effective.
As to Lin Dan maybe he needs time to get used to the Li Ning rackets!
