Ray, you must bear in mind that in tennis, Grand Slams are the only thing that really counts. Thats why nobody remembers the other things. However, for a badminton player, the Olympics is the most prized possession, and a world Championship is something very special. However, the All England is also consiered extremely important and LCW has one of those 🙂 or two of those I should say!

Well, Paul wrote exactly why I added this list (tiny) list of not-so-popular shuttlers. This Wong Choong Hann plays, since his return, as an independant player. Meaning : no coach, no physio, probably no (professional) trainer/training facilities, sponsors, budget, … the lot. And still he makes to the QF/SF/F of medium tournaments (Swiss open, Australian open, …). I think this is rather impressive. Keep in mind he is nearly as old as Gade, was injured (and considering the time he was out of the circuit, must have been quite bad), but still manages to keep up with the rest of the subtop. What if he would have the same training sheme and all the extra's LCW has now ?

But don't get me wrong, how LCW won the AE, I've never seen him more confident than in this final. And his barn stacked with trofees is impressive.

So, having bad days ? Hmm, look at the Indian open (ongoing now). Saina: out: Kuncoro: out; Tago: out. All in the very first rounds of the tournament.

Cheers, ED

Saina being booted out so early in the Tournament is one great shock to me; it just goes on to show that one can't take anything for granted in these high level tournaments. I think there is a great psychological advantage to being an unseeded or low seeded player going into a competition where the strong players are expected to win. Witness Tago's playing during the AE 2010 final against Chong Wei, who I think prepared psychologically to face Lin Dan in the final but instead had to play against another, relatively unknown, left hander who basically had nothing to lose.

To add to Ed's remark about players going independent, Hafiz Hashim (AE 2003 champion) also recently went independent after getting quite dismal results in his past few tournaments. His first couple of outings have not been too impressive but I am hoping that he can find his form again and display those flashes of genius when he won that AE against Chen Long 8 years ago.

I am surprised to hear the Wong Choong Hann doesn't have a coach and the rest of a backing squad. The reason I say this, is that there are many independent players on the tour: Taufik HIdayat, Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan, a Malaysian pair I can't think of.

Certainly in the case of the first three, they do have coaches and support staff on their bench – butit is personal staff, rather than the federation staff.

And ray: I think you've made a few typing errors: Tago was not left handed, but right handed 🙂 and Hafiz won against Chen Hong – you must have missed the key on the surname. Chen Long i a current player on the tour, whereas Chen Hong was a great chinese player towards the start of Lin Dans career.

Well Matt, just watch his matches on YouTube of the recent years. Look how many people surround him in the intervals (I'll give it to you, zero !). And on posts commented by Super/Astro Sport, the comentators mention it he has no coach. Just found this remarkable, and that's why I “followed” him a bit arround.

(Read this post just for info) All the best, ED

Ed, thanks! I didn't know that 🙂 Incredible!

Its interesting very intersting by comparison that for a long period of time Roger Federer was the best tennis player in the world, and for a year or two he had no coach – but he did have a physical/conditioning team supporting him.

Its clear from what you say he seems to have no coach. Does he have ANY support staff? I would think a physical trainer wouldn't exactly sit courtside with him, but may be there behind the scenes?

Thanks again.

Matt

I’ll need to watch out for this player as I’ve not heard of him until your post.

We need to see a few emerging stars right now. In some respects badminton singles needs a shot in the arm because it’s the same faces competing in the last 16 barring a major upset.

This proves the level of consistency required at the top is immense and that’s why so few players make it. It seems they do not understand how to recreate their winning formula.

I noticed recently that Sho Sosaki was beaten in two games by LCW 21-13, 21-14. I would be interested to see that game. It is either a case, as paul said, of this player not being able to reproduce the form that led him to beat such high quality players (earlier in the tournament), or it may be the case that LCW, the world number 1, is just that much further ahead than everyone outside the top 3.

Matthew

Food for thought. We know LCW is now exceptional. His fitness levels are beyond most of us although we have to remember he’s been training for years. Look at recent photos of him – his muscle definition is amazing.

However, we have to remember that he’s also got a superb team behind him which does make life a lot easier. In addition to this, he’s worth a fortune in his country and shouldn’t ever have to work when he eventually retires. How many of our players can say that – I suspect none.

Paul
