Hi Dobbie, if you want this to be a Poll, you need to supply two or three answers that people can pick from in order to make a graph and use percentages. Otherwise it will just be a questionnaire, but in case that's what you meant anyway, I will be the first in having a go and answering them (honestly too).
How many members of the forum has badminton coaching or training?
Other than attending Paul's weekend course twice, none.
Does your club provide coaching / training?
Not at the moment no. I do know that some members do get coaching elsewhere (not at other clubs that they play at, but coaching sessions)
Do you as individual seek out your own coaching / training away from the club?
No. No time or money. I do however, try and research information myself and learn to try and implant it into my game myself. I learnt a lot on Paul's courses but carrying that on away from the course is more difficult that it sounds. Trying to change all the bad habits I've “learnt” over the years is a challenge in itself. This is why it is easier for beginners or youngsters.
If your club doesn't offer training, would you like your club to put on coaching / training?
Tricky question. Yes and no. I play once a week and that is my time away from work and parenting. So I like to play as many games as I possibly can (“there's a court free, who's playing!”). Part of me would want to have coaching but part of me knows that I would lose my playing time for the week. Tricky. And on top of that, I'd have to pay even more to play (our club is one of the expensive to join in the league, mainly due to court prices).
Would you be more likely to join a club that offers coaching / training?
See above! Tricky one, but I don't think it would sway me. The problem for me is trying to imagine joining another club as one of the reasons I play where I do, it's that in my opinion the best club in this area and there aren't many clubs in the area as it is. I have to travel quite far and cross the county boarder to get there! But I guess it depends on how the coaching was set-up to whether it would encourage or discourage me to joining.
Do you as a player just want to play games?
No. As much I have just said about playing games, I do understand the importance of practice and playing with partners. Coaching is a tricky area with time and money, but I know that if I practice with my partner and we lose on club night but we have learnt a lot about our play, then it's not just about playing the games. The difference between people practising together and those who don't, is generally shown in the league games. And that's the games I want to be winning. You be thinking that everything is good and you are playing well, only to play in the league and get well beaten. This is why you need good players at your club to help you push your standard up so that playing in the league is a bit more like club night. The number of times I've seen the best players from a club get thrashed in league games is quite a lot. They might be the best in the club with no threat, but that doesn't do them any favours when it comes to league games.

How many members of the forum has badminton coaching or training? Yes (weekly)
Does your club provide coaching / training? Yes – the organiser is the top coach in the area, and there is a good club culture for club nights. Some nights, with fewer people, some players will take to a court and practice a new shot/existing shot. On busier nights, less experienced players tend to ask questions on court and between games about techniques and tactics, positioning etc. There is also quite a lot of “feedback” after games e.g. you are moving well but you should take the shuttle higher etc. The “better” players tend not to practice, other than play games and discuss tactics etc.
Do you as individual seek out your own coaching / training away from the club? Yes (weekly)
If your club doesn't offer training, would you like your club to put on coaching / training? Not Applicable – I would like a longer and better warm up at the start of the evening sometimes though. If you get the wrong partner (e.g. too weak to hit clears or drives or whatever, or too aggressive and doesn't let you warm up), then it doesn't work well.
Would you be more likely to join a club that offers coaching / training? No – I expect competitive games. Practice time is a bonus, not a requirement.

I have attended a couple of courses (being coached) and am now a level 1 coach myself and help at two weekly sessions for elite juniors; this helps reinforce my own learning.
Does your club provide coaching / training?
Yes – occasionally. We have two level 2 coaches and at least two level 1 coaches. Coaching tends to happen more during the league season.
Do you as individual seek out your own coaching / training away from the club?
Yes. I have attended courses and I undertook my level 1 under my own initiative.
If your club doesn't offer training, would you like your club to put on coaching / training?
I would like to see more.
Would you be more likely to join a club that offers coaching / training?
I am already a member of two clubs – can't afford a third!!!
Do you as a player just want to play games?
I want a mixture of both – I want to play games well.

Formally only Paul's weekend. A few sessions as an absolute beginner at school / youth club.
Does your club provide coaching / training?
Yes but only for juniors / beginners.
Do you as individual seek out your own coaching / training away from the club?
No (apart from Pauls upcoming weekend ) due to time and cost. I do talk technically with other 'enthusiastic' players about my game and what I can do to improve certain aspects.
If your club doesn't offer training, would you like your club to put on coaching / training?
Training sessions yes. The teams at my club often request one court be put aside for a team practice session for an hour. This is generally opposed by a 'social' player citing the court being taken away from club night. (1 court for 1 hour, 4 courts available for 3 hours, not that this annoys me or anything )
Would you be more likely to join a club that offers coaching / training?
No, its a social thing, I want to play with people I like. I would change clubs only because I wanted the opportunity to play in a higher division. (Or I no longer like the people at my club )
Do you as a player just want to play games?
No, training and being coached is often just as much fun.

How many members of the forum has badminton coaching or training?
Yes I have been coached at 3 of Pauls weekends and then with 2 other coaches for about 3 months at a time
Does your club provide coaching / training?
No, maybe get the odd tip and piece of advice but thats it
Do you as individual seek out your own coaching / training away from the club?
Yes I had to as I felt I wasnt going to improve if I didnt
If your club doesn't offer training, would you like your club to put on coaching / training?
Yes, If coaching was offered, I would definately come along
Would you be more likely to join a club that offers coaching / training?
Yes certainly
Do you as a player just want to play games?
Playing games is good fun but if 1 wants to improve, he must do drills using the correct technique
How many members of the forum has badminton coaching or training?
Yes – currently once a week for half an hour
Does your club provide coaching / training?
One in Manhattan yes to both adults & children in the form of private lessons, the YMCA is basically a community center, therefore no. Another badminton club in Brooklyn that I started going runs summer camp for kids.
Do you as individual seek out your own coaching / training away from the club?
Yes
If your club doesn't offer training, would you like your club to put on coaching / training?
Yes
Would you be more likely to join a club that offers coaching / training?
Yes
Do you as a player just want to play games?
No.
I enjoy seeing myself improve and getting better with practice and proper training. As a beginner, I found it very frustrating to learn by just playing games in doubles (space limit in the city)
My ideal badminton programme would be one weekly personal coaching, one weekly group class, & one weekly game playing session. If I have any energy left or if work schedule permits, I could do shadow drills, interval training, core exercise, swimming or dancing on my “off” days.
