Again interesting to read different views on this subject.

I assume you have seen on Facebook that video of the match is now available on Badminton England website.

In many respects this league needs our support but where the league and badminton goes after this is anyones guess.

I am deeply concerned at slipping standards and falling numbers in badminton clubs, especially in ladies playing this game. I feel men have to be far more supportive to their mixed partners as encouragement creates fun. If the game isn’t fun then the player leaves the club and perhaps badminton completely. We have lost too many ladies in clubs.

As I stated in my previous comments, it is unclear how NBL will benefit grass roots badminton. If it’s a break-even situation for BE then they have done a good job with televised coverage and corporate sponsorship entering the frame. I just hope it’s enough to ensure we have a second year of NBL and can begin to see where this is all going.

Just watched some of the Derby Birmingham game on YouTube and to be honest i wasn’t too impressed, there is a mix of UK based and european players who obviously haven’t played together much, if I watch badminton I want to watch good quality matches of which there are many on YouTube including the recent Asian games.
As an aside i was going to look at getting tickets for the London Grand Prix gold which was on about this time last year only to find it was cancelled due to lack of government support, would badminton england have been better directing finances at this higher level competition.

Watched the Dutch Open finals last weekend, new scoring system, … I don’t like it. Matches were more balanced than on the Belgian International, but still luck is to much part of the game. Defensive players will have a hard time to win. Catching up 4 or more points is almost impossible. The attacking player is in favor. I really like to see him play, but I think this is why Rajiv didn’t make it to the finals IMHO.
@Roger, sorry for the late reply: Asians tend to start slow. I think we will see more 5-setters from now on. Singles vs doubles: singles are more tactically played. I think in doubles the tension is much higher to score, which makes the points are more often made by mistake than clear winners, compared to the current system.
But what I dislike the most is the absence of the setting. If the match turns out 5×11-10, can a player(s) then have the feeling: I’m the true winner, I was the best ? Hmm. Maybe it’s just perception, but I truly hope the current system stays.
Plus, why should it change ? “To make it more popular”. When did they last change football ? Cycling ? Swimming ? Cricket ? I find football and cycling extremely boring. I never watch it. No matter how much they change it (unless Queens idea would make it Cool), still it will not make me get on a bike, or kicking a ball.
Just my thoughts, ED

I’m surprised this scoring system doesn’t include a setting. A one-shot finish is almost a cheat.

I’ve said from the beginning that changing the current scoring system is not going to bring more players into the game. Sadly we have to accept that our sport is simply too fast for the general public to watch and learn from. We don’t have enough slow motion and explanation of the game for them to get it.

It’s wrong to compare badminton to tennis because the speeds, rests, overall viewing are completely different.
